Marketing Mythbusters Case #5 – Please Retweet Doesn’t Work

twitter tips for business marketingEven if you’re just a newbie to twitter, I’m sure you’ve seen people include something like: “please retweet,” or “please rt” in their posts. You may have wondered, does this really work? After all, with only 160 characters allowed, that’s some valuable content real estate being taken up. So the question is, does this work, and how well does it work?

“Please Retweet” Data

The answer is yes, and much better than you probably would’ve ever thought! After analyzing more than 10,000 tweets, the data showed that while 51% of the tweets that contained the phrase “please retweet” were retweeted at least once, only 12% of the tweets not containing the phrase were retweeted. Once delving deeper into the data, it was found that tweets which contained “please retweet” were retweeted 20.1 times on average, while tweets with the phrase “please rt” were retweeted 6.1 times on average, and tweets without any call to action were retweeted 4.2 times on average. I don’t know about you guys, but this data was pretty astounding to me.

Marketing Take Away

There is one clear take away from this which we probably all already know, but sometimes forget. Incorporate clear calls to action into everything you do! If you want something, you’ve got to ask for it right? So do the same thing in your marketing and never assume that people know what you want them to do (even though it should sometimes be obvious). You see what the astounding difference is between the tweets that spelled it all out, and the tweet that just used “please rt.” So don’t be afraid to directly ask for the retweet, and see what happens.
